What really happened on July 4th, 1776

The Continental Congress did not vote for independence on July 4th, neither was the declaration of independence signed on that date.

As our pastor pointed out, what did happen on July 4th was a ‘meeting of the minds’ and an agreement/adoption of the language of the Declaration of Independence.

So, July 4th has to do with a formal declaration (of the language and basis) of independence, as the written contract or declaration was agreed to and voted on.

July 4th has less to do with actions of separation or signing, but the forward-looking affirmation and agreement of words.

Excerpt from History.com
“On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted to approve a Virginia motion calling for separation from Britain. The dramatic words of this resolution were added to the closing of the Declaration of Independence. Two days later, on July 4, the declaration was formally adopted by 12 colonies after minor revision. New York approved it on July 19. On August 2, the declaration was signed.”
